COLLISION AVOIDANCE SYSTEMS (CAS) IN MINING
TerreSauver has just completed the largest and most comprehensive Collision Avoidance Technology testing in surface and underground mines (production vehicles, production areas and current vehicle operators), of its kind in the world.
Core lesson 1: CAS is not what it seems …
Implementing CAS is not just installing technology to your mining fleet/vehicles which have been identified as posing a significant risk by a desk-risk management-exercise . It is the integration of a “whole new way of working” into your current operational model, and it is led by, and will affect your traffic management (which is crucial to the successful implementation of CAS technology), people behaviour (which leads to > 60% of all TMM incidents and accidents) and overall, to your risk profile – technology risk (CAS and OEMs), operational risk, production risks, financial risk as well as reputational and right-to-mine (regulatory and legal) risk.
Core lesson 2:
Only Proceed once all the aspects of a CAS implementation has been considered and included in a detailed implementation plan.
